PLACE-BASED IDENTITIES AS CATALYSTS FOR ACTION IN UNESCO SITES

INTRO

This paper explores how place-based identities and senses of belonging can strengthen action-oriented sustainability research in UNESCO Biosphere Reserves and World Heritage sites. We argue that people’s emotional, cultural and historical connections to place, specifically in the form of identities and senses of belonging, are not simply outcomes of sustainability—they are valuable resources for mobilising collaboration, learning and collective action. By highlighting practical approaches for engaging with place-based identities and senses of belonging, the paper shows how researchers and practitioners can design more inclusive and effective sustainability initiatives while also leveraging the scaling potential of international networks such as the UNESCO Man and Biosphere and World Heritage programs.
