About our Community of Practice

We are a small community of early career researchers. Our individual research focuses on a diversity of themes; however, we all share an interest in applying resilience thinking using collaborative, participatory, and inter- and transdisciplinary approaches.

When using such applied, community-engaged research methods, we are often faced with context-specific, ethically complex, personally challenging situations that require practical skills and the ability to make judgement calls that cannot be learned by reading scientific papers or books. Instead, we believe in developing individual capacity through reflection and dialogue with like-minded peers.

The goal of our group is therefore to intentionally co-create a community of peers with whom we can bring up ideas, challenges, failures, and share experiences from our various complex research contexts. Our individual experiences, knowledges, and interests contribute to a collective learning process about using participatory methods in applied resilience thinking, making us better researchers, colleagues, educators, and facilitators.

How we got started

Our Community of Practice started as a Resilience Alliance Young Scholars working group on applying resilience thinking and participatory methods. We were officially established at the Resilience Alliance Science Meeting in Oracle, Arizona, in May 2023. Some of us also met in person for a community retreat in connection to the Resilience Alliance Science Meeting in Nordhordland (Bergen), Norway, in May 2024.

Who we are

Currently, our community consists of 13 members: Agnes, Beke, Elson, Gwendwr, Jackie, Katja, Marianne, Morgan, Nana, Rafael, Suby, Theo, and Vanessa.

If you have any questions about us as a group, please contact our coordinator Katja: katja.malmborg@uib.no.

What we do

Our main activity is our monthly online meeting. Each meeting has a theme, suggested by a member, and we have developed several formats to facilitate constructive group dialogue in an online setting.

As of June 2024, we have started recording Soundbites from a Community of Practice. These are audio recordings of conversations between two to three community members, where we share personal examples and synthesize insights from our monthly meetings on topics related to practicing participatory research methods and applying resilience thinking.

Things we want to share & recommend

Here, we will soon share resources that we have developed as a community, such as our charter and our formats for constructive online dialogue.
