ALVAR’S SPRING FLOWER HAT & HOODIE SLEEPING BAG

Finishing date: November 2020

My friend Hanna has truly green fingers. The lushness of flowers and vegetables in her garden is breath-taking, every year. When I learned that she was expecting in 2020, I started making plans for a piece that would make her little son blend right in among the sunflowers and sweet peas while she plants and weeds and waters at the allotment.

It was way too big when little Alvar arrived in December 2020. But then, right in time for the first blooms of spring, it started to fit his little head. Like a little bouquet of flowers, lying in his pram. Almost too cute to look at.

I was of that age. So many of my friends were having babies. It is always wonderful news. But still, there is something special when your oldest friend has one. I met Hanna on the first day of first grade. We spent that first afternoon sitting in the crafts room at school, drawing. In late 2020, she gave birth to a baby boy. Alvar. A new world begun, a childhood of drawing and tumbling in snow embarked upon. I made him a leafy hoodie-sleeping-bag from alpaca wool.
